- The temple was famous since the 8th century A.D. Even during the Mughal period this temple was mentioned in the Khulasati-t-twarikh written between 1695 and 1699 A.D.
- In the 18th century, the Maharaja of Gidhaur fought against the Nababs of Birbhum for the temple. After defeating the Nababs of Birbhum, the temple was revived.
- Following the battle of Palsy in 1757, the administration of the temple was taken by the East India Company.
- In 1788, the first English collector of Birbhum visited the holy city and handed over the full control of the temple to the temple priest.
