Bhimashankar Jyotirlinga temple is an ancient temple located in the Bhorgiri village in the state of Maharashtra. This temple lies 125 kms north of Pune in the ghat region. This place is the source of river Bhima. Surrounded by the Sahyadri hills amidst long stretches of dense forests and gushing waters of Bhima, this sacred shrine provides a serene calm and peaceful environment.
As per the legend there was a king named Bhimak of the sun Dynasty who was doing penance. Lord Shiva was pleased with him and granted him his wish for pious river named Bhima. The Jyotirlinga is named after the river and Lord Shiva’s other name Shankar.
In this temple the Shiva linga is said to be self–emanated (Swayambhu). The main temple is surrounded by temples of Datta Maharaj, Lord Vittal and Lord Ram The architecture used in this temple is the beautiful Nagara style of architecture.
