The brief history of the temple is as follows

• It is believed that very very long time back the then chief of Verul, a very ardent follower of Lord Shiva, came across a treasure in the snake pit. He used the treasure for building the temple of Grishneshwar.
• The temple was rebuilt in the 16th century by Maloji Bhosle.  In the 18th century the temple was renovated by the Queen of Malwa kingdom, Maharani Ahilya bai Holkar whose reign lasted from the year 1725 -1795.
