There are countless number of lingams in shrines all over lndia. However Jyotirlingas are a set of 12 specially revered temples, which since ancient times are prime places of worship for the devotees of Lord Shiva.

These 12 shrines thus form an important itinerary of their pilgrimage. The twelve traditional Jyotirlinga shrines are:

The distribution of 12 Jyotirlinga temples are as follows:

  •   Two Jyotirlinga are on the sea shore.
  •   Three Jyotirlinga on river banks.
  •   Four Jyotirlinga in the heights of the mountains.
  •   Three Jyotirlinga in villages located in meadows.
