Rameshwaram temple is located on the Pamban Island in the district of Ramanathapuram in Chennai. This island is separated from main land India by a small Pamban channel and is about 40 kms from Mannar island, Sri Lanka.
Pamban Island, also known as Rameswaram Island, is connected to mainland India by the Pamban Bridge. It is from this place Lord Rama built a bridge known as Rama Sethu, across the sea from Lanka to rescue Goddess Sita from her abductor Ravana. The presiding diety of the temple is the Shiva Lingam which is named Shri Ramnatha Swamy. This temple has amazing architecture and is famous for 1200 huge granite pillars which adorn the temple. The temple has 22 sacred wells known as thirthas and taste of the water in each well is different from the other.
The water from these tirthas have medicinal properties. The devotees take a holy dip or bath in all the 22 thirthas before ending their pilgrimage.
